In our new home we decided to do away with the wall that defined a formal dining room. We still wanted to have some sort of smaller seating situation there. I really wanted a 42″ Eero Saarinen table but I think I was just dreaming. So the hunt began for a vintage Burke table. I soon realized that even the Burke tables were fetching a pretty decent price. For me, locally is not the best hunting grounds so I turned to eBay. I came across a listing for one 46″ Burke table and four different Eames Herman Miller chairs for a very low starting price. Click “READ MORE” to get the rest of the story.
The starting price of the auction was less than what you would pay for just one of the chairs. Here is the bad part LOCAL PICK UP ONLY, nooooooo. I followed the auction anyway and there were no bids. I contacted the person after the auction was over to see if he would let it go at the starting price. He replied “yes, I need to get it out of here”. I made a few calls to some moving companies in Santa Barbara CA, that is where the table was located. They referred me to a place that would pick it up, put it on a pallet and ship it to me. The cost was perfect, unfortunately the owner of the table had already gotten rid of the orange shell chair. I was pretty stoked to get them home. The base will be re powder coated and the edges refinished.
It was now time to find four or five chairs to go around the table. I decided to do Eames Herman Miller shell chairs. I wanted to do gradient effect starting with lemon yellow and moving through white, light gray, dark gray and ending in black.
I found the yellow, black, and white one so I am on the hunt for a light and dark gray. I will do a follow up post after everything is refinished and ready for the house.
