Eastvold + Plastolux - The final chapter

Eastvold + Plastolux = Goodro Credenza

The eagle has landed or in other words I finally received the Goodro Credenza from Matt over at Eastvold. While opening the well built shipping crate, I couldn’t help but wonder how well this piece traveled from Minnesota to Washington State. I was pretty amazed at the packing job done by Eastvold, every part of the credenza was given thought to when crated. Everything arrived safely and me and the family are super stoked to have this amazing piece in our home. From this collaboration other designs have been created as well and don’t forget that Eastvold can tweak or change these designs to suit your needs. Final construction and crating - Eastvold credenza update

eastvold plastolux
Seeing the final pictures of this amazing walnut custom credenza put me, do I dare say, into some giddy school girl state of mind. Another cool aspect of this project is the crate. I almost think the crate alone looks like some kind of modern industrial credenza.

From Matt at Eastvold:
The crate is built from 1/4″OSB and pine 2×4’s.  I have learned to prepare the crates for the worst because I have seen the worst. They get loaded onto semi trucks, sometimes airplanes and shuffled around warehouses, none of which are gentle.  The shipping company I have been using is called Home Direct At Your Service and they have been wonderful to work with.  Their specialty is shipping furniture at a reasonable price and work hard at making sure things go well and when they don’t, they make sure all issues are resolved.  Their role is a third party broker who finds the best company for the piece.

What would you do with the crate?
Chuck it?
Use it for fire wood?
I will for sure use it, but how?

Eastvold custom credenza update - NICE LEGS!

The leg structure has been laser cut, welded and powder coated and they look amazing. Thanks to Discount Steel for the laser cutting and welding. The powder coating was done by Kangas Enameling and the white looks killer.

A simple explanation of powder coating is: Electro statically charged powder is applied with an electrostatic spray gun to the steel part that is grounded. The enamel is then baked onto the piece at 320 to 410 degrees. Powder coatings contain no solvents and release negligible amounts of VOC’s into the atmosphere, which eliminates the need for costly pollution control equipment. Also, most powder coating overspray that does not adhere to the part can be retrieved and reused, virtually eliminating the waste found in liquid finishing systems.

Taking shape - Eastvold credenza update

I am so excited to see this piece starting to take shape. I guess I really didn’t realize all of the steps that are involved in making such a custom piece of furniture. I actually think I began to salivate when I saw the first picture. The wood grain on these walnut boards is so amazing. Make sure to check out the rest of this post as Matt from Eastvold walks us through the steps necessary to achieve this level of craftsmanship.

Eastvold credenza update

The design is finalized and the materials are being gathered and sorted. I have decided to keep the top closed with two sliding doors, one will slide behind the other. The 3 main doors will be powder coated steel to keep a consistency with the leg structure. Matt from Eastvold has teamed up with Wood From the Hood a company that specializes in harvesting urban wood that would normally be turned into mulch or firewood, you can even track by zip code where your wood was harvested from. Move over Ikea now there’s something meatier

I am very excited about this particular series of posts. I have always wanted to design and build a really nice piece of furniture. Lack of know how, time and proper tools have always kept me from trying. With Mr. Tax return just around the corner the time has come. It is time to say goodbye to my hacked lkea Lack credenza and hello to a custom designed and built credenza oozing with walnut goodness. I know most of you are laughing right now because you think I am going to attempt the build, this is where the professional is introduced.

I have posted about Eastvold Custom several times and with good reason, they do amazing work! The drool fest began with my first post about their custom kitchen work, I still love that first kitchen. For the last couple of months Matt from Eastvold Customs and I have been sharing ideas, inspirations and sketches. Part of our goal was to design a credenza that has a good mixture of several flavors: a little mid century modern, current modern, and natural materials. Below are are some of our inspirations.

We love the look of the leg structure found on this piece by Arne Hovmand Olsen and manufactured by Mogens Kold of Denmark.

I have always liked the combination of a rich wood and a solid color
