One of my new years resolutions was to do a little more thrifting. I found a little old house turned antique shop, knowing full well it was not my flavor I took my chances. As I rounded a corner there he was George Washington with his little smirk. I thought it was a pretty cool picture but then moved on right out the front door. The next two days I couldn’t get this thing out of my mind. I went back hoping it was too expensive and I could just be done. George came home with me that day for $25. I quickly broke out the acrylic paints and went to town. I wanted to mess with the print itself but did a little hunting and found that it is from the 60’s and are pretty hard to find in this large size. I am sure it’s not worth much but I decided to leave it as is. Make the jump to see what happened to George.
DIY Nakashima Splay-Leg Table by Knoll
Bryan recently sent us a great modern DIY. He came across the Nakashima Splay-Leg Table by Knoll and fell in love with the long sleek lines and walnut flare in the legs and end trims. I post these DIY’s because a great artist has inspired the average joe to create something. So when most of us can’t afford a 1,500 coffee table we must make our own! I have to give Bryan props, it deosen’t look “exactly” like the Nakashima table, but I really like the look of it. Below are pictures of the original table by Nakashima. Cuttin’ glass and takin’ names
My latest Modern DIY came from pure curiosity. I had read about bottle cutters on different sites and forums and thought that could be pretty fun. I live in a area where there are a lot of wineries so that means there has to be plenty of wine bottles laying around. I personally don’t drink wine but was easily able to get my hands on some. I was also able to pick up a Ephrems Old Time Bottle Cutting Kit on eBay. Get some of the tips and tricks I learned on the way after the jump.
Modern DIY Lighting by Pieter Bostoen
I know today is eBay Monday but I was to excited to see this DIY modern lighting fixture by Pieter Bostoen. So I will bump my eBay post to tomorrow. Modern DIY Sofa - Eric Dalpiaz
I received an email from Eric Dalpiaz this week to tell me about some of his DIY projects. I am glad he reached out, his modern sofa is really killer (ok I use that word too much) but really it is killer. On a scale of 1-10 on difficulty I would have to say this is probably a 8 or 9. Maybe we can get Eric to make up some instructions with measurements and details. And what a great idea for a coffee table, a straight up piece of concrete! If you have any questions for Eric post them here and I am sure he will be glad to answer them.
Here is my sofa that I built. Hardwood and MDF frame. Elastic straps for the seating. Foam on all sides of various thickness, different for seat, back, and arms. Knoll upholstery, stain resistant and ‘green’. I did all the work myself except for the upholstery, had to have someone do that for me. Breaks down into 6 pieces as you can see, bolts together to form one piece. Seats 4 comfortably.
Also the table in the pics is actually concrete. My parents had their driveway replaced, I had the contractor saw cut that piece out, I ground the underside in four spots and attached casters to make it ’somewhat’ easier to move.
