If you haven’t heard of Hometta yet, they are a site focused on bringing top designers/architects and us “Joe Publics” together to build our modern dream homes. What does this mean for us? What it means for me is, the affordability issue that comes with a one of a kind custom modern home will not be a stumbling block for me when it comes time to take the jump and build my dream home. Mark from Hometta also tells me they are offering blueprints for DIY construction of modern home accessories and furniture (mailboxes, dog houses, shelving, and much more). Based in Houston, Texas, Hometta is a collaborative of designers, architects, builders, writers and editors who have banded together to rethink and improve the way residential architecture is designed today. Founder Mark Johnson and partner Andrew McFarland joined forces with four core architects and designers, whose vision has guided Hometta’s development. They, in turn, have helped recruit the 24 studios who have contributed home plans to Hometta’s first stage of life. The editorial team consists of Jenny Staff Johnson and Ann Chou.
Modern DIY Table - Sean Michael Regan
I came across a truly awesome DIY. Sean Michael Regan has his own opinion on high design furniture which led to his recreation of the “Moebius” side table. And it’s name shall be “fauxbius table” for $65.78 I think it looks pretty killer. Get the rest of the details after the jump.
The $450 price tag, sans shipping and/or sales tax, is simply ridiculous. As a demonstration of this absurdity, I set out to reproduce the concept of the table, using hardware-store parts, at a fraction of the cost, without losing any of the functional or aesthetic appeal of the original.
DIY Brass Lamp Gone Silver Modern
JanMichael over at AMODERNU sent us this very cool DIY. He found a great Modern Arc floor lamp for an amazing $14. There was only one problem, the thing was brass. JanMichael’s first thought was to paint it but with a little research he found a way to make that ugly dated brass, silver modern! For a grand total of $24 he now has a very cool modern arc lamp. He even shares a few tips how to get that ugly duckling a little cheaper. Check out more “after” pics and a link to the DIY after the jump.
DIY Eero Saarinen Side Table
I usually don’t post on the weekends, but I will be on a plane all day tomorrow. I have been trying to find a good deal on some used Eero Saarinen side tables but it seems so is everyone else. I came across a pair of old Bose speaker stands and thought humm, those look really close. So I picked them up for $70 for the pair. I really wanted to do these on the cheap until I could buy the real thing. I used some fiber board, $8 at the big box store. All I had was a router and I needed something round and close to the size I needed for a template. I used the top of my kids laundry hamper from Ikea. I then cut the tops, sanded and a coat of black paint that I already had and presto my fake “temporary” Eero Saarinen side tables. See the final result after the jump.
Modern Chair Restoration - Herman Miller Fiberglass

The seat was totally bleached and flaking fiberglass. Here it looks like water had sat in the seat while the chairs led a neglected existence outside. Poor chairs!
Modern Lamp Rehab
This spring I am participating in the AT Spring cure. I have been collecting and fixing things to make over our master bedroom. This weekend I painted 2 of the 3 walls matte black. I also finished rehabing this modern lamp. I kept it orange because the colors we are using are blacks, grays, whites, pinks and oranges. I had to use steel wool and a lot of sand paper to make it look presentable but I think it turned out good. Make the jump to see the after pic.
