The Visual Language of Herbert Matter
I might be a little late on this one, but if the opening sequence of The Visual Language of Herbert Matter is any indication of what the film will present I am very excited. Make the jump to view this beautiful intro made by Leftchannel.
THE VISUAL LANGUAGE OF HERBERT MATTER is a revealing look at the fascinating life story of the highly influential mid-century modern design master. Known as a quintessential designer’s designer, Swiss born Herbert Matter is largely credited with expanding the use of photography as a design tool and bringing the semantics of fine art into the realm of applied arts.
Inspired by Russian constructivists and taught by artists such as Fernand Léger, Le Corbusier, and A.M.Cassandre in Paris in the late 20s, Matter designed a series of cutting-edge Swiss travel posters that won international acclaim for the pioneering use of photo-montage combined with type. Always striking a balance between fine art projects and commercial work, the taciturn designer found his own unique language, which resulted in the creation of such iconic works as the corporate identity for Knoll Associates and the New Haven Railroad. With his photography he was adept in documenting the early furniture of Charles and Ray Eames and creating covers for Vogue and Arts & Architecture as well as documenting his contemporaries Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning or Alberto Giacometti. Minimal Interiors & Type - Sebastian Freytag
Some very cool spaces created by Sebastian Freytag. I really like the way he uses typography and simple blocks or planes of color to transform a room. I love the facade of the ERROR store, I might have to snag that concept for somewhere in my new house. More after the jump.
Infographiti = Eva Dijkstra & Michael Lugmayr
Infographiti is the work of Eva Dijkstra and Michael Lugmayr. Their art work and installations are based off of information, that is then turned into art called infographics. Infographics have started to pop up by artists and graphic designers alike. These are truly beautiful, any of these would look killer in an office or in my home. More after the jump.
Infographiti is a body of work by Eva Dijkstra and Michael Lugmayr, an exploration into the aesthetic potential of the graph as a work of abstract generative art. The result is a series of data generated artworks and installations in which the boundaries between art, research and graphic design are progressively blurred and challenged.
Flickr Drop - Texture & Pattern
Sorry for the Flickr post but I have spent all weekend moving out of my house, I am sure most of you can relate. I started a new set called Texture and pattern. There aren’t too many photos in the set yet but here are some of my favorites. Sorry for the lack of source on these.
Dune wall tiles from Urban Product (UP)
I was totally blown away when I laid eyes on these amazing wall tiles from Scottish émigré Stephen Lindsay. I would love to make a table top out of these with a piece of glass over the top. Maybe even a headboard. What about the front for a really large credenza? The ideas could go on forever. Wood, ceramic and concrete are materials currently on track for production. Make sure to check out his site because UP also has some very clever products. More stunning imagery after the jump.
Graphic Patterns - Jonathan Calugi
With my recent visit to Columbus Indiana which included a private tour of the Miller home I have gained a new appreciation for Alexander Girard. When I stumbled across the work of Jonathan Calugi I felt a strong connection between the two. Jonathan Calugi’s work is original and well done but I can see the simplicity of shape along with repetition of pattern in both these artists work. See more of Jonathan Calugi’s work after the jump.
Jonathan Calugi is an illustrator based in Italy and it is from his self-proclaimed chaotic workspace, that he creates his clean illustration and pattern works. Each piece is a take on his quirky child-like doodles with clean minimal lines and simple, uncomplicated colours.
And it is through these simple visual works, that Jonathan draws in viewers to a basic stand and cultivates appreciation the very epitome of the common phrase of “Less is more”. A very good nudge away from what can be a messy and rather perplexing world at times.
