A friend gave me this old weathered Horsnaes teak chair that was in pretty bad shape. So, here is my Danish teak chair restoration. This is my first attempt at doing something like this but hopefully I can share some tips with you that may help with your restoration.

As you can see the chair was in really bad shape. It look as though it had been sitting outside and the cushions were covered in cat hair. A funny thing to note is that the back was on backwards.

The chair taken apart. Make sure when you are taking a piece apart, you label and keep track of your hardware. Take pictures if you need to. There were only six screws that held this chair together so it was pretty easy keeping track of everything.

First I needed to clean the teak. Fine steel wool and mineral spirits were used to scrub the timber. You may want to scrub, rinse and let dry to see if you need to repeat.

I felt like I needed to sand the wood to get a more even coloration. It had been outside way to long. I used a very fine sand paper to even out the grain. If you decide to sand teak, make sure to cover your mouth and nose. You do not want to breathe teak dust. This is one side cleaned and sanded.

Now the fun part! I researched a lot about “Danish Oils” IMPORTANT! Make sure your oil DOES NOT contain hardeners or varnishes. This is a picture of the two sides, one oiled and one not.

After my research I decided to go with Star Brite, a marine grade teak oil. I was very pleased with the results.

Rub oil into the wood with a lint free cloth (I used an old t-shirt). Let it soak in for about 15-20 min and then wipe dry. I then let the chair sit for a few hours and could see that it needed another coat. In the end, I used four coats of oil. The wood was very thirsty.

My chair used Fagas Straps as many of the Danish chairs do. I found http://www.fagasstraps.com and also found out that they are the only company that imports these original straps in the U.S.

The Fagas straps are really easy to install, you don’t need to know anything about upholstery. Hook one side in, and pull toward you with the chair against your body and hook in the other side. You don’t have to be the Hulk to install them either.

I didn’t want to takle the upholstery myself so I sent that out. I chose a gray wool nubby Maharam Outback 151 by Kvadrat. The last few projects where I have needed fabric I have gone to Modern-fabrics.com. They have a great selection, great pricing and you can get samples.

I have to say, that fabric choice looks pretty nice with the teak frame.

Talk about turning an ugly duckling into a swan! When I saw how weathered that teak was in the first photo, I wasn’t very hopeful, but you did a fantastic job bringing it back to life. The upholstery choice is perfect, and the chair is beautiful. Congrats!

    Thanks Dana!

Amazing what a little elbow grease can do!
