In one of my posts last week I had mentioned that we had sold our home. One of my favorite features of this house is the red maple on the side of our house, it is so killer. Underneath this maple is a blanket of small maple trees that I haven’t the heart to rip up. I decided I needed to take a little of this house with me when we move out. See what I did with these small trees after the jump.

I went down to my local big box store and picked up some supplies. 1 large drip tray from a large pot $14, a plastic drip tray $1.50, some ground cover of your choice $3.50 and some potting soil $5.00.

First thing I did was drilled a hole for drainage in the drip tray using a masonry bit. After that I sealed up the hole with some polyurethane I already had. If you don’t seal up the hole the terra cotta or what ever it is will get wet and eventually crack the tray.

I then put down a layer of gravel from my front yard for better drainage.

I picked out 4 maples with different color leaves planted them along with my ground cover added some white rocks we already had. I think this will look better once things fill in. In no way am I saying I am Mr. Japanese garden guy but I think it turned out pretty cool.
