The design is finalized and the materials are being gathered and sorted. I have decided to keep the top closed with two sliding doors, one will slide behind the other. The 3 main doors will be powder coated steel to keep a consistency with the leg structure. Matt from Eastvold has teamed up with Wood From the Hood a company that specializes in harvesting urban wood that would normally be turned into mulch or firewood, you can even track by zip code where your wood was harvested from. Matt from Eastvold custom:
when I get a shipment of lumber, I sort through the boards and use the best parts of the boards for the most visible areas. Usually there is waste such as the knots and cracks and discoloration. The curved boards will get cut length wise so that I don’t have to take a whole bunch off to get a straight board.
This crazy pile of wood is a good contrast to what the final product will be. Part of what is really enjoyable about building, is turning a disheveled mess of boards into a sleek modern piece.
It is really cool to note that this wood was harvested from a tree in the Minneapolis zip code 55417.
Wood From The Hood produces high quality lumber and other wood products from the Twin Cities area “Urban Forest”. By reclaiming the old growth trees in our local area, we can produce high quality products from a sustainable resource and take one more step towards environmentally sensitive building and remodeling.
