Most of my life so far has been lived in a house with ample yard to go with it. So this “sandwiched” rehab is a little out of the norm to me. This project has floated around the bloggmess quite a bit so sorry if this is a repeat for you. There are so many elements that I like about this modern home. The black facade standing out among the other older weathered facades is very cool. One would think it would be difficult to bring the outside in with a home like this but they did it quite well. On some of the interior walls the outer brick wall just continues form the outside in and the courtyard ads a little outside flavor too. More after the jump.

Chad: Jan 04 09 at 2:12 pmThis house is around the corner from me. A little more on the background:
This was a rehab done by three architecture students in Philly during their summers and spare time. They took on this project and did almost all the work themselves rather than going the more traditional internship route.
Tyler: Jan 04 09 at 5:25 pmChad thanks for the info, I think that background info makes this rehab that much more impressive. On another note, do you know what was used on the exterior of the house? My wife would love to open a modern salon and loves the black metal screen look.
Chad: Jan 04 09 at 5:45 pmNo problem. The front is nothing more than perforated corten steel sheets. You can see it is starting to rust in the top of the first picture. Now, the full facade is almost completely rusted.
The panels are simply set a couple of inches off of the front of the house which is stucco’ed with normal windows and doors. During the day, the facade looks like solid metal. At night you can see is if the lights are on and the shades are open. It adds a bit of privacy and security to a rough street in addition to looking sweet.
Marie: Feb 04 09 at 11:20 pmI really adore your website. I think we must have similar taste!
I live in Atlanta and I was wondering where I might find the panels that this home has as a facade on the front? You said that they were perforated corten steel sheets. Do I just go to a metal fabricator and show him a picture? I was just thinking of a way to cover some old windows on the front of a classic ranch to make it appear more contemporary.thanks for all the info, this is my new favorite pastime!
Tyler: Feb 05 09 at 11:12 amMarie, thanks for the kind words, Try emailing Chad at the 100khouse.com site he was the one that told me about the steel sheets. He is the post right above yours.

Tyler: Feb 20 11 at 10:28 pmWow, it looks bad now. I really don’t like the rusted facade.
Dave: Apr 05 12 at 2:40 pmI really like the effect of rusted metal. Personally.
