Last weekend we put our first tree in the yard (Crimson century maple) and it got me thinking that I hadn’t done a post on modern landscaping for quite some time. Melbourne based Taylor. Cullity. Lethlean. has a great portfolio with some very creative residential landscapes. I love that lighter colored crushed or small stone that is used in some of these pictures, does anyone know what that might be. The first picture = almost perfect!

I’m not sure if this is what is in the picture, but it looks like decomposed granite. It is used around here quite a bit. It looks really great in modern landscapes and can be used for paths and mulch alike. It compacts really tightly, but still lets the ground breath and is water permeable. I’ve also used it between flagstone instead of mortar. The best thing about it is if you get a crack or a low spot you just fill it in and tamp it down. Whala! Want to add a plant? just break it up (not difficult) dig your hole and fill back in. Typically landscapers will just leave it loose around bedding plants and use a plate compactor on paths, but it will compact on its own and gets a pretty firm “crust” after some rainfall. I love it.
